A total of 94 registered participants took the plunge into Morien Bay for the 10th anniversary of the Port Morien Polar Dip, held on New Year's Day. This was the first time since 2020 the event was held in person at Port Morien. IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POSTPORT MORIEN, N.S. — Illona Shaheen and Cathy Horechuk weren’t sure what to expect when it came to New Year’s polar swims — particularly one that drew a large crowd to the shoreline below Morien Cliffs Municipal Park.

Danny Lundrigan of Sydney with his 12-year-old son, Jackson:"We’ve never done this before. But we’re both pretty excited — oh, and terrified." - IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POSTDanny Lundrigan of Sydney, along with 12-year-old son Jackson, also felt a desire to take part in the swim for a good cause. But once the two were on the beach, reality quickly set in for the first-time participants.

The return of the in-person Port Morien Polar Dip marked a welcome sight to the local community and surrounding area, as the event drew 94 participants, and hundreds more onlookers viewing the proceedings from the park, as well as the steps leading down to the Port Morien sand shore. Initial expectations, Snow told the Cape Breton Post last week, aimed for have between 30 to 50 swimmers and “we are expecting that to be consistent this year.”“We’re just thrilled this all came together,” Snow said afterward at the Port Morien Legion, where a post-swim levee was held. “The first year back at the beach, we had the biggest crowd we’ve ever had.

“It definitely wakes you up, but it felt good,” Comer after he quickly made his plunge in and out of the water.
