“There would be no concerns about strike lines,” he said. “We’ve had conversations with lots of contractors, lots of other utilities and, in the events of a large-scale crisis, they would flow workers to us.”
Conrad did not give many details of the offer but said Ottawa Hydro has offered workers a 13.6 per cent cumulative wage increase over four years. That would place its powerline technician wages among the top 10 in the province by next year, with only utilities in and around the Greater Toronto Area paid more, he said.
“Hydro Ottawa is one of the five largest utilities in the province, they tout themselves as a leader in the industry, but the folks here rank around 23rd on the compensation end of things,” Hall said. Safety is the top priority for management, said Conrad. “We have existing processes in place. We have a joint health and occupational table that meets on a monthly basis chaired by the union and management that works through health and safety issues. If there’s something there, it gets brought to that table and resolved,” he said.Article content
