Two accused teenagers to remain in custody for at least two more weeks | SaltWire #newsupdate #newsST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Husky Oil Operations Ltd. has been ordered to pay a total of $2.5 million in fines for a 2018 crude oil spill believed to be the largest in the province’s history.

The spill saw 250,000 litres of crude oil discharged into the water at the White Rose field, about 350 kilometres southeast of St. John’s. According to an agreed statement of facts, the incident occurred due to a failure in a flowline connector after a controlled shutdown and restart of production. Third-party water sampling conducted in the following weeks detected no hydrocarbons in the area, and sediment samples taken Dec. 8, 2018, and Jan. 6, 2019, from the sea floor in the area of the spill were also below detections for hydrocarbon components.

McConnell offered a deeper explanation of what went wrong in her media statement, saying the flowline connector failed because of hydrate formation within the pressure balancing system.
