“When the body was recovered from the water, deputies determined the male had been bound, shot and stabbed multiple times before being dumped in the water,” the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office said in a terse release. On Thursday, Flagler County Sheriff cold case Det. Sarah Scalia announced that McPhail was John Doe. The Canadian man was 58 at the time of his grisly murder and had moved to Florida sometime in the 1990s.

Scalia said at a news conference that cops were then able to narrow down exactly who John Doe was. Eventually, they found a distant relative of the victim. Was McPhail — who went by Bruce — in the state for business or pleasure? He had moved to South Florida but Flagler County, where his body was found, is more than 400 km away.

McPhail himself is a blank. Scouring the files of the Winnipeg Sun, Brandon Sun and the Kenora Daily Miner, the only mention is of a Bruce McPhail playing hockey in Manitoba.
