Fifteen West Hants residents who have always gone above and beyond in the service of others were honoured recently with a Queen Elizabeth II Platinum ...

Retired third-generation firefighter, Bob DeMont, lobbied for several years to have veteran firefighter licence plates issued in Nova Scotia. That pursuit was successful in 2021. In 2023, he was awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal for his volunteerism. Pictured presenting the award is Hants West MLA Melissa Sheehy-Richard.

“The meaning behind the medal resonates with me: Queen Elizabeth II, in her Ascension Day message, said that she hoped the Platinum Jubilee would bring together family and friends, neighbours and communities. She reflected on and valued the goodwill of people and communities around the world that she witnessed during her reign,” said Shields.

“I’m just humbled by people thinking I’m worthy of that, for doing something that has really been second nature to me,” said DeMont. A staple in the horse-riding community for five decades, Mary Henry was one of West Hants’ recipients of the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal. Henry was instrumental in the development of Pony Club for the Annapolis and Fundy Region. Opinion: Building an event centre in West Village puts the Stampede at riskSadly, Calgary has the most inadequate professional sports facilities in Canada. On that issue, most Calgarians will agree. Most Calgarians will also agree on… My understanding was when they build the saddledome where they did was because of the parking avaliable at the grounds plus the ctrain now that there ctrain going west. Dont think it will effect stampede I don’t care where you build it, as long as it’s the Calgary Next project, the Stamps need a new home as well
