Dressed in layers, the cold and snowy season can be a tonne of fun for the whole family

Parents being involved in winter fun with children can help foster a positive attitude towards being active outdoors, regardless of the season. - Dea Andreea photo/UnsplashSally O’Neill says there’s one very good reason people of all ages should get outside in the winter. Because it’s fun, says the new recreation manager for the town of Pictou, N.S.

The key to successfully being outside in the winter, according to O’Neill, is having proper layers of clothing. Pick a base layer made of synthetic or wool , a mid layer like a sweater or light jacket and a wind-proof coat. Insulated snow pants, or leggings under water-resistant pants keeps you toasty and dry. Wool socks in your boots and warm gloves or mittens, a hat and scarf or neck protector of some kind complete a warm winter outfit.“There isn't any magic to it,” explained O’Neill.

As for children, O’Neill said one of the most important reasons for kids to play outside in the winter, aside from the fact that there are fun things to do out there, is to engage them in positive experiences in outdoor winter play at a formative stage. If they enjoy winter as a child, they are much more likely to continue to enjoy winter activity for life. It's not just personal quality of life at stake either.

Sledding. It requires a bit of fitness and ability to fall and get back up, but it's a super family activity and doesn't cost much. Crazy carpets are pretty economical and easy to find. Make ice cream out of snow. There are different recipes for this, but the general rule is milk or cream sweetened to taste and flavoured with vanilla. Some say mix it directly into clean snow and scoop it into cones or bowls. The way I always made it was to use two Ziplock freezer bags. Put the milk mixture in a small bag, then fill a large bag with snow and salt. The salt melts the snow and lowers the freezing point of the slush in the bag.

Snacks and hot drinks outside. Pack a thermos with hot chocolate, coffee or mulled wine, bring a few special snacks and have a picnic. This is a great idea for a winter date. Stealing frosty kisses is a bonus.
