The 14th Annual Walk for Reconciliation is set to take place at 8:30 a.m., starting at the downtown Harry Hays Building and heading to Fort Calgary. The event began in 2009 to commemorate former prime minister Stephen Harper’s historic 2008 apology to the survivors of Canada’s residential school system.
This year’s walk is set to be the largest on record, with more than 450 people registered to attend, according to Fort Calgary, which organized the event in partnership with the Trellis Society and the Aboriginal Friendship Centre of Calgary. “Canadians, now more than ever, are tuning into the honest histories of our country — and of our city, even,” said Bekah Jarvis, Fort Calgary’s director of community engagement. “More and more people are interested in hearing the stories, the different perspectives, the Indigenous stories of this land, and making that experience part of their own journey towards reconciliation and their own understanding of our truthful histories.
Events like the walk, said Jarvis, are critical for Fort Calgary’s journey to reconciliation and recognition of its colonial past. “We want to make sure that we are telling a different story, a more complete and truthful story of the history of Fort Calgary,” she said. “Fort Calgary itself is here because of a colonial history … We are looking at our history through a different lens and telling different stories and reckoning with our own colonial history as an organization.”Article content
