How could the Oilers look under Dave Tippett? His former players gave SportsnetSpec the lowdown.

EDMONTON — Shane Doan had only played 18 games for new head coach Dave Tippett back in the 2009-10 season, but it was after a 3-2 win at home by his Phoenix Coyotes that he saw something he says now, “was one of the things I’ll never forget.”

“I would tell them, be prepared to have to play a full 200-foot game,” began Ray Whitney, who played two seasons under Tippett in Phoenix. Whitney tied his second-best points total ever, with 77 points for the Coyotes in the 2011-12 campaign. “The guys who have the ability to make plays will have more freedom, but at the same time he’ll hold everyone accountable to how he expects everyone to play the game. Which is,” Doan adds, “the right way.”

Tippett’s Coyotes missed the playoffs in each of his final five seasons behind the Coyotes bench, the caveat there being the financial and organizational mess the Phoenix/Arizona team has been. They have had a rock-bottom budget and a carousel of owners, two things that are not conducive to building a winner.

Spec He’ll convert a lot of 5-3 losses into 3-1 losses. progress oilspill

Spec I wasn’t thrilled that Tippett might be the prime candidate for the head coaching position but after reading your article and seeing the respect some of his ex-players have of him , I now think he’s maybe the man to start cleaning up this mess

Spec Boring, like any team he coaches.

Spec Great article Spec! I'm actually excited for Dave Tippet! He did a great job with a mediocre Coyotes team. He obviously instilled a winninig culture and his players respected him. Excited to see what he does with Connor and Leon on his bench!

Spec OH and by he way they already offered him a contract!! there just waiting for his reply.👍👌

Spec Great! Getting retired and classy players to sell a long out of work coach. Of course they are only saying great things about him

Spec I thought he was a good coach with Coyotes..they were a winning team in the Pacific Division..and tough to play against..

Spec Probably not good

Spec How many playoff rounds did the coyotes win with Tippett as coach?

Spec

Spec Like the Coyotes

Spec Hopefully we never find out

Longtime Oiler Craig MacTavish to coach KHL's HC Lokomotiv - Sportsnet.caEdmonton Oilers senior vice-president of hockey operations Craig MacTavish has signed a two-year deal to get behind the bench of the KHL's HC Lokomotiv, the team announced Thursday. 😍😎 I couldn't be happier for the Oilers. MacT has been a cancer along with the rest of the ol' boys club. Winning championships is definitely an asset but that doesn't qualify you as a GM, Coach, hockey ops or where ever the hell they hid him away so he can whisper in Katz ear. Jake_Jacobsen12
