Astros sign stealing accusations latest tarnish reputation. MORE:

HOUSTON — Not too long ago, the Houston Astros were the feel-good story of baseball. Led by their diminutive Venezuelan dynamo and featuring smart play on the field and in the front office, they emerged from a morass of awful seasons that got them mocked as the ‘Lastros and ascended to the top of the big league galaxy as World Series champions.

Getting close to the line, or even crossing it, has long been a part of sports — witness the suspicions that have followed the New England Patriots during their dynasty. The Astros won the World Series that year — two sources told The Athletic that Houston used the system into the playoffs while another source said the system ended before the post-season. Using cameras and technology to swipe signs is prohibited by MLB, though there are whispers that many clubs might do it in some form."We take the allegation seriously and we're going to look into it," he said at the GM meetings in Arizona.

But the damage was already done. While the Astros were competing in their second World Series in three seasons, much of the talk about the team was centred on the clubhouse incident and their handling of the story that followed.

Allegations of Astros' sign-stealing raise key questions for MLB - Sportsnet.caDespite all the ways technology and modern business practices have changed baseball for the better, the use of video and other tools in sign-stealing are changing the game for the worse. Shi Davidi on how the Astros have used that technology to turn ridiculous into reality. ShiDavidi *sighs* just another example of the MLB taking forever on this nonsense. I mean a few years ago the NHL changed a rule WITHIN the regular season so it wouldn't continue into the playoffs. The fact that the NHL gets ontop of issues faster than the MLB is saying something. ShiDavidi If it found to be true, then the people involved should be severely fined and banned for life from participating in MLB. There is no need to cheat. It's just wrong. ShiDavidi Get rid of the signs completely. Pitchers shake off the catchers until they get the pitch they want to throw anyway, just skip the signs and let them throw what they want. Might speed up the pace of game everyone’s whining about, too.
