Hobson's Choice: Drama and music fill the summer months at local theatres yyc yycarts

The Syringa Tree, written and first performed by South African actor Pamela Gien in New York in 2001, is an often shattering, but ultimately uplifting look at apartheid in South Africa through the eyes of a white South African woman in Johannesburg. It follows Elizabeth from childhood to adulthood.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary Herald, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.

Rosebud artistic director Morris Ertman calls The Syringa Tree “a captivating story highlighting the enduring bonds of family love. It is a play that is right at home on a Rosebud stage because it explores themes of deep-abiding love and friendship, resisting a world divided and a lasting connection to place, all of which hearkens to the heartwarming message of finding home.”

Alberta Theatre Projects produced The Syringa Tree in 2005 starring Meg Roe. It was so popular, it returned for another run three years later. Rosebud’s The Syringa Tree stars Vancouver actor Katharine Venour, who grew up in Priddis and graduated from the University of Calgary. In the early 1990s, Venour starred in such Theatre Calgary shows as Summer and Smoke, A Christmas Carol, and Amadeus, and was also a regular with Theatre Junction in such shows as Beyond Therapy and Look Back in Anger when it had its home in the basement of the Jubilee Auditorium.
