In a nod to its original occupant, the new development has reclaimed its name, Turner's Dairy, as well as some of the buildings' original Edwardian-era features.

Occupying nearly an entire block at West 17th Avenue and Ontario Street, the dairy expanded to three buildings in the 1920s. In 1946, Larry Izen bought the property to manufacture his Durabilt luggage brand and hired a newly arrived immigrant named Haider Hemani. When Izen decided to close the operation in 1978, Hemani purchased the property to carry on his own craft of leather manufacturing.

In a nod to its original occupant, the new development has reclaimed its name, Turner’s Dairy, as well as some of the buildings’ original Edwardian-era features. Project partner Unbuilders, which carefully deconstructed then reassembled the buildings, retained and reused some of the old-growth Douglas fir hanging trusses. “The heritage lumber in some of these buildings was upwards of 100 years old that we had to repurpose, get cleaned up and conform to today’s standards,” says Hassan.

“Inge used the height of the buildings to get views from the top floor. the kitchen on the third floor and bedrooms on the lower floor is referred to as a reverse plan,” says Hassan.Article content
