As the water supply from reservoirs continues to be threatened by drought, the City of Lethbridge is considering its options in a new water conservation plan. One of those is moving to a tiered scale to charge its highest residential and commercial water users more. The Oldman reservoir outflow at the Oldman Dam is shown in this photo dated August 18, 2023. Drought conditions in southern Alberta have prompted the City of Lethbridge to draft a new water conservation plan.
Tier one is for households using 20 cubic metres — 20,000 litres — of water or less per month. Users in that tier would continue paying the current rate. "You can get a long way in having people voluntarily make changes in their daily routines and in the way they use water," said the city's manager of engineering and environment Mark Svenson."What's also shown to increase that capacity or that conservation is those economic pieces."Under the suggested changes, that scale would be adjusted to target those who use more than 5,000 cubic metres of water per month.
"There seems to be a presumption here that because our water rates are lower than other jurisdictions that there's plenty of room to jack them higher," he said.Leier says he's concerned residents may not be able to afford an increased rate, even if it is cheaper than other municipalities. The city says scaled rates would not affect most residents as it targets the heaviest residential water users.
