One-day strike will be second such job action by unionized workers, who say contract negotiations have stalled

Striking teachers of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation picket outside of the Toronto District School Board head office on Yonge Street in Toronto, on Dec. 4, 2019.Ontario’s high-school teachers and support workers will stage a one-day strike next Wednesday at select boards, including the Toronto District School Board. The Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation said on Friday that the escalation comes as contract negotiations with the government have stalled.

This follows a one-day, province-wide walkout by 60,000 OSSTF members earlier this week – the first province-wide strike in more than two decades. “In the absence of any movement at all, the ball is in the union’s court,” Mr. Lecce told reporters on Friday, noting his government’s offer to soften its plan to increase class sizes and force students to take some courses online.

Mr. Lecce said high-school students will be required to take two online courses to graduate instead of the province’s initial plan of four. Recently, Mr. Lecce also softened the government’s stand on increasing class sizes in high schools to an average of 25 instead of the previous goal of 28 over four years. The current average is 22.5.

I’ve spent a few weeks in my life teaching children 8-11 years old. I will never complain about teachers again.

I'm not sure what people find so unreasonable about OSSTF's demands. Ontario is currently a powerhouse/world leader in education, they simply want to maintain that. Also a 2% increase in pay means that they're not actually getting a raise but rather just keeping up with inflation
