“It’s a really big deal for us to be able to properly represent the jazz continuum with artists who are the kind of trailblazers who have made the music what it is, seamlessly fusing different styles and technologies into the kind of Afro-futurism that has been bubbling up lately,” said Robert. “Herbie Hancock hits the sweet spot where jazz, hip-hop, funk and more meet. Plus, he’s coming with an incredible straight up killer quartet.

It’s an A-level band with guitarist Lionel Loueke, bassist James Genus, drummer Vinny Colaiuta and saxophonist Terrence Martin, many of whom are bandleaders in their own right. It’s anyone’s guess what music Hancock will choose to showcase from his career with these players. Other concerts highlights announced include the adventurous Performance Works series with such artists as saxophonist Donny McCaslin and his Band , well known for backing the late David Bowie on his final album Blackstar; Inuk singer Elisapie whose latest album Ballad of the Runaway Girl is a career high and flutist Brian Jackson playing songs from the Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson Songbook . The shows at Pyatt Hall, Imperial and Frankie’s Jazz Club are also announced.twitter.
