It was also in Philadelphia in the ’80s when the revised origin of the name said black stood for the day that accountants in retail would switch from using red ink, which signified losses, and could move to black ink to signify profit. It wasn’t until the late ’80s when it became a retail event in all the United States.
In Canada, the takeover of Black Friday has come at the expense of Boxing Day, though small retailers are more likely to lean into that. I miss my teenage holiday tradition of lining up early on Dec. 27 to get the deals at Sam the Record Man.
