Jaxon Williams is ready to lend a hand in building his new house in Stellarton. - Ray BurnsSTELLARTON – It seems that Kennedy, chairman of the Pictou County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity, and Graham, the construction site supervisor, wanted to get their money's worth out of this volunteer for a day. I can type a little bit and take photos, but my construction skills are pretty much nonexistent. That didn’t seem to deter the pair as they eagerly assigned me a broom.
The site operates from Tuesday to Saturday to allow volunteers who work through the week to have at least one day they can help. The process to become a volunteer is simple, you can sign up online and then show up at the site. Collect the safety gear they supply, sign a waiver, and then get to work. It's that easy.
After a while, they trusted me enough to help lay a chalk line – perfectly straight, I might add – and even use the nail gun. That did come with some sound safety advice from Dave. “Always make sure you look where you shoot,” he said.
