SYDNEY, N.S. — A Florence man was found guilty Friday of second-degree murder and will return to court in July to learn how much time he must serve before he can begin to apply for parole.
Another man, Stephen Bishop, 40, was also charged with second-degree murder but pleaded guilty to the included offence of manslaughter and was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Bishop admitted to striking Bradley in the back of the head with a metal chair which dropped the victim to the floor. Like first-degree murder, a conviction on second-degree murder carries an automatic life sentence. What now needs to happen is for the court to decide parole eligibility which can run between 10 to 25 years.
Trial testimony indicated that the Brook Street home, rented by Bishop and his partner, Natasha Burke, was a drug den. It was a place for intravenous drug users to get high and occasionally buy drugs. He testified that he was asleep on the living floor after being on an alcohol-fuelled bender for several days and woke up to an argument involving Bishop, White and Bradley. He thought it might have been over cocaine.
During the trial, two defence witnesses were called, Sheila Bona and her boyfriend, Steven Robinson, who testified that White was with them at Bona’s home at the time of the assault on Bradley.
