A report points to the need for a new negotiated date for completion of the bridge project beyond the contractual date of the end of 2024.

A financial analyst’s report points to the need for a new negotiated date for completion of the project beyond the contractual date of the end of 2024 agreed to by both the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority and the $5.7-billion project’s contractor, Bridging North America.

Giant support beams that will eventually form part of the on-ramp road portion of the Gordie Howe International Bridge are shown Thursday. “Given the scope of the project and the long duration of construction, any number of challenges may be encountered that may impact the schedule. The pandemic is one example of a challenge, and it, among other issues, may lead to adjustments in schedule.”

Part of the construction site at the Canadian port-of-entry side of the Gordie Howe International Bridge that will soon span the Detroit River is shown on Friday. Fluor and the other global partners leading the Gordie Howe bridge project are in the midst of dozens of massive infrastructure projects worldwide where similar complications have arisen due to the pandemic.
