Here are the words that most frequently send people in each province and territory to the internet to ask 'how to spell...' (From the archive)

Last week, just ahead of America’s national spelling bee, Google released a list of words that people in each state didn’t know how to spell. Google Labs came up with its list by looking at the most searched “how to spell” words across the country.

So Maclean’s asked Google to run the same experiment in Canada. Here are the words that most frequently sent people in each province and territory to the internet to check the spelling:At five letters “altar” in the Yukon and “yacht” in Nova Scotia are the shortest words on the Canadian list. Meanwhile the Canada and U.S. maps show that spelling difficulties transcend borders, with neighbouring B.C. and Washington state both stumped by “pneumonia”.

The real question is, why are people in Alberta so concerned with spelling supercalifragilisticexpialidocious? They’re not alone on the continent, either. The biggest word you ever heard, from the 1964 film Mary Poppins, was also the most searched for word in West Virginia and Connecticut.

Colour is spelled correctly.

Try adding defiantly instead of definitely. That is always a favourite spelling error among college students.

Surprised 'definitely' isn't on here! Seems 3/4 of the time people spell it 'definately.'

i love PEI

I don’t think supercallifrag....is a WORD.

I always spell leugue wrong. See.

What I really want to know, is when to use ‘affect’ or ‘effect’? Can anyone explain in a way that is easy to remember?

Facetious can be remembered by thinking it’s the only word with AEIOU in that order.

Yeah, I'm sure that's really the word for the NWT. Definitely, absolutely...

It's not that we don't know how to spell colour, it's that we're perplexed that there's a version called color and we get confused.

According to the 2019 Canadian Census the most misspelled word is LIBERAL. Correct spelling version is LIEBERAL

Uhh how often does that get used in Alberta?
