Gone with the Wind' pulled from HBO Max until it can return with 'historical context'

The removal of the film comes as mass protests sweep across the United States followingThe 1939 film, which tells the love story of Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler during the American Civil War, is considered by many to be a cinematic classic and isHowever, the movie is also incredibly controversial. The film's portrayal of slavery, African Americans and the Civil War South has been received much more critically in the decades since its release.

"These racist depictions were wrong then and are wrong today, and we felt that to keep this title up without an explanation and a denouncement of those depictions would be irresponsible," the spokesperson said. "If we are to create a more just, equitable and inclusive future, we must first acknowledge and understand our history," the spokesperson said.

"It is a film that glorifies the antebellum south. It is a film that, when it is not ignoring the horrors of slavery, pauses only to perpetuate some of the most painful stereotypes of people of color," Ridley wrote. "The movie had the very best talents in Hollywood at that time working together to sentimentalize a history that never was."

It is about history let’s get real

Unbelievable!

Frankly I don’t give a damn

Stupid! What censorship!

Don't take away a masterpiece movie just because you can't handle histories.

Folks lay attention to the headline. They're gonna change the movie so it suits their goals. They're literally rewriting history. This movie is a snapshot of the views of white America at the time the movie was made. Not now FFS!

Good think it can be purchased on disc.

And the millennials probably think Game of Thrones is true.

🤦‍♂️

How many people are even watching this that it has become this big of a deal?

A movie set in the era of the American civil was and you need to provide 'historical context'? What happened to studying history in schools? Has the stupidstick really had that much of a workout? Good grief!

When you cave to the Left Cancel Culture that doesn't know history gets you to

It's on Netflix in Canada if you need to see an 80+ yr old movie so badly.

The world has gone mad.

Oh for goodness sake, stop this madness, it was a movie of the times, enough of the politically correct agenda, bull shit, it’s all bull shit

And cue the fragile cons crying about not being able to celebrate a time when slavery was something you could pay in a positive light. You poor, delicate flowers.

Learn from the past, don’t bury it

Going a little too far now, are we

Has it been forgotten that this film garnered the very first Oscar for a black actress? Does burying this film ALSO bury that fact?

Boo hoo boo hoo boo hoo boo hoo POOR SOFT LITTLE SNOWFLAKES, THE WHOLE COUNTRY IS LAUGHING AT YOU ....

FFS, the stupidity continues

So how do you unwrite history?

So if anything current has a slaving past, it must now be cancelled? Your Law of Unintended Consequences mileage may vary. Considerably.

Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.

Wow - what’s next? Book burning? Say no to censorship - let people think for themselves.

And now it's number one on Amazon.

I do believe HBO wouldn’t know historical context if it walked up an slapped it.

OMG I get that racism has to stop. But move forward. You CANNOT CHANGE OR ERASE the past. Things like Gone with Wind and the Little House on the Prairie books were written during that time in history. LEARN from it!

Why? It depicts what it was like in that era whether it is right or wrong. Hopefully we learn from the past.

Its a great movie & a great book . I guess we're just going to have to censor ourselves now, right, to appease the idiots on the Left who want to deny us our liberties in the name of 'tolerance' & deprive us of independent thinking because they deem it 'offensive' to their ideas?

Well, i will now be canceling my HBO

Unleash the artCritics, VirtuePolice, bookBurners, and historyControllers

Great idea!!! Let's remove all slave scenes and take her Oscar back

Hmmm. They autta take a closer look at all films then.

Madness! Enough is enough

That's asinine.

I think the movie (and the book) makes it pretty clear what the situation in the South was at that time. The title says it all, in case you missed that.

This is absolute nonsense!😡

I hate libs they ruined everything

The cult of the Left follows the CCP of Chinas way of things...destroy all history and rewrite it to please the Cult. The liberal left are batsh*t crazy and 2020 showing it 100%

FFS....this is stupid. It's an historical novel dealing with a real part of US history. We need to know history that's good; bad and ugly so we don't keep repeating it. Duh.....

OK everyone this is simply ridiculous - excessive censorship. Then what about shelving all TV and movies that include the vial word 'fuk'? Old westerns that depict first nations negatively? Spousal abuse? Murder? These are all stories of our society for better or worse.

Do the ones making these decisions realize how counter productive it is? By removing the content, it makes it easier for people to pretend it doesn't exist.

What a fucking joke. Classic movies are going to be lost because political correctness bowed down to the minorities.

George Orwell-1984. Remember how they pulled Catcher in the Rye because it promoted communism

What does the term “historical context” even mean? It is already obvious that the movie is a historical period piece set before and during the civil war. It is not like it glorified that time period.

Guess you will have to delete this one too with Al Jolson, dear ole Mammy.

EYEROLL

Do you know who else censors media...China, Russia...is that the road Canadians want to take?

If I was an African American I’d be consumed with the now and the future. Not with an 80 yr old depiction of my great great great grandmother.

After the Russian revolution the Communists ordered the mass destruction of prerevolutionary books and films. They were considered politically incorrect. Think about that.

Removing it doesn’t change the fact that it existed.

Assholes. That's why I never watch HBO. All they have is garbage.

nonsense

Context such as what? Subtitles pointing out constantly that they’re despicable slave owners, founders of KKK? The film Doesn’t just depict history, it glorified these people and laments the end of an era built on slavery.

The pussification of society is just sad.

Frankly my dear, anyone who watches Gone With The Wind and thinks “My what an idylic life those slaves had” just isn’t paying attention. It is evident throughout that even most cared for slave (eg Mammy) at best reaches status of a pet (except by Rhett perhaps).
