Sasaki is the Vancouver Giants’ equipment manager and the WHL team will be wearing its special Grinch-inspired uniforms for the annual Teddy Bear Toss game at Rogers Arena on Sunday against the Tri-City Americans. The Giants landed winger Tyler Preziuso and defenceman Trevor Longo from the Medicine Hat Tigers in exchange for disgruntled centre Lukas Svejkovsky and defenceman Dylan Plouffe.
Giants’ general manager Barclay Parneta could be giving Sasaki more to do in the coming weeks, too. It’s fair to expect he’s not done trading in a bid to get Vancouver going in the right direction. The Giants have underachieved to date, sitting 14th overall in the 22-team loop as of Saturday morning thanks to their pedestrian 13-13-1-1 record.
As well, the first-round pick in the deal gives Vancouver a significant chip to play with at the trade deadline on Jan. 10. The left-handed shooting Longo, 19, is looked at as a solid, two-way player. He doesn’t have the skill of Plouffe but, at 6-3 and 200 pounds, the North Vancouver product does give the Giants more of a physical presence. He had four goals and 10 points in 27 games with the Tigers, who had the WHL’s second-best record starting action Saturday with a 20-7-1-0 mark.
