People seldom announce their sexuality openly; orientation is a delicate dance of expectations, behaviour and subtle cues that can say as much about others as about oneself. And as in all aspects of life, people can wear masks, and sometimes hate themselves for it.
One night, after some youthful hijinks, Franky and Ballas have a bedroom encounter. “Never would have happened if we weren’t wasted,” says Ballas, adding that it was Franky’s doing anyway, and then cutting off all contact. From his mom, Carly : “I thought it was supposed to be socially acceptable these days for kids to experiment.” But her anger at her ex-husband – “He wasn’t gay when he married me!” – clearly colours her views.
Canadian writer/director Keith Behrman lets the story unfold at a natural pace, backed by slick 21st-century indie tracks by Hiltrons, Kid Wise, Doombird and more. Sometimes it’s playing in Franky’s earbuds, other times on the soundtrack, and occasionally it seems to bleed from one to the other. And while there is an evolution to the story , Giant Little Ones doesn’t end with a tidy resolution.
