The Ottawa Senators served notice Monday they’re alive and kicking.

Goaltender Cam Talbot made the stops when necessary as the Senators moved to within two points of the Wings in the standings. The Senators knew the meaning of this game and they looked like they wanted it more than Detroit.

Coming off a 5-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday, the Senators are trying to treat this two-game series against the Wings like a playoff matchup. The club is trying not to scoreboard watch and is focusing on a better than .500 record monthly. You have to wonder if the 35-year-old Talbot has played his final home game with the Senators after being acquired last summer. Teams have called to kick tires and the possibility exists he gets moved by Friday.

Just when it looked like former Senators goaltender Magnus Hellberg was going to shut the door on his former teammates, a four-goal outburst by the club gave Ottawa a two-goal lead heading to the third period. Ottawa Senators left wing Tim Stutzle scores against Detroit Red Wings goalie Magnus Hellberg in the third period at the Canadian Tire Centre.“There was definitely a lot of emotion from both sides. I thought everybody played great. We were rolling the lines and the fans gave us some energy,” said Giroux. “It was a great game for us, but we know they’re going to come out hard tomorrow.
