Ten months after the Senators were put up for sale by the estate of the late Eugene Melnyk in Nov. 2022, the National Hockey League is preparing to hand over the keys to the Canadian Tire Centre to the group led by Toronto healthcare billionaire Michael Andlauer this week.
Talks continued through the weekend to try to dot the i’s and cross the t’s on the complicated deal. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman stated Friday in Chicago that the deal could close this week. Andlauer is scheduled to be a guest of Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe at his monthly breakfast series Thursday at 7 a.m. at city hall. That will be cancelled if this deal isn’t done by Wednesday because it wouldn’t make sense for it to be Andlauer’s first public appearance as the owner.Article contentReal-estate mogul Bruce Firestone, the founder of the club, paid a $50 million expansion franchise fee to bring the Senators back to Ottawa in 1992-93.
Postmedia has reported the expectation that former Senators’ president Cyril Leeder, who helped Andlauer with his successful bid to purchase the club, will be brought back into the club’s front office.
