NDP Health critic says the time is now to repeal Bill 124 and bring health care workers back to the fold

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said his government is doing all it can to find more workers to fill vacancies in the Ontario healthcare system. Ford said in Stratford Wednesday that the province is facing "a generational labour shortage" that is affecting more than 380,000 jobs in several sectors across the province. The Nickel Belt MPP said Ford is "downplaying the crisis in Ontario's hospitals to justify his government's lack of action.

The main concern for Bill 124 is that it put a one-per-cent wage cap, per year, on any increases that could be won by public sector employers, such as registered nurses, registered practical nurses and several other classes of healthcare workers. The limit is for three years. Gélinas said the passage of Bill 124 was such a slap in the face to health-care workers, they just began quitting because they felt so disrespected and disillusioned.

"And they said I've had enough, I'm leaving, I'm not going to be a nurse anymore. I'm not going to be a physiotherapist anymore. I can't take this anymore," she said.

Jones comments on hospital staffing crisisOntario Health Minister Sylvia Jones says the shortage of health-care workers in Ontario is not unique to the province, but a global issue. they should try paying them more. what bullshit. it's not a global issue. it's just an issue in countries that didn't bother taking proper care of its medical personnel. the ontario gov't has done us all dirty by letting this happen Ontario barely had enough medical staff pre-pandemic. But firing them for a personal choice during a pandemic wasn't the smartest. Maybe they should hire them back, oh but wait. If they did then they would have to admit they were wrong to do fire them in the 1st place.

Gotcare shaking up the home care industry by pairing workers with clients, paying workers a living wageWith Gotcare, CEO and co-founder Chenny Xia is trying to address the wage gap that she believes is at the heart of the home care worker shortage in Canada The average person doesn't have enough money to pay for homecare or private pay assisted living. I could only pay for palliative short term private care or some month long thing after surgery. Anything longer term I would have to choose medical aid in dying.
