Former cabinet minister, cancer survivor John Manley loses 'unfortunate' insurance case

Former deputy prime minister John Manley has lost a legal bid to secure a $500,000 insurance claim that was rejected because he received a cancer diagnosis just weeks after cancelling his critical illness coverage.

Manley appealed that decision to the company’s ombuds office. In a letter to the firm, he said, “I would respectfully suggest that Manulife’s values would indicate that this is a circumstance in which a strict reliance on the letter of the policy rather than its intent…is inappropriate.” Manulife lawyer Gordon Jermane argued that the insurance policy was clear: that a critical illness diagnosis was the “triggering event” for a policy entitlement. It meant, he said, that for Manley’s insurance claim to be valid, his diagnosis had to take place while premiums were still being paid.

New scientific breakthrough could lead to 'one-size-fits-all' cancer treatmentNew research has uncovered a T-cell receptor that can distinguish between cancerous and healthy cells, potentially leading to a universal cancer treatment. sorry... My kind of cancer has no bearing on breast cancer.. Kidney cancer.. Pancreatic cancer.. lung cancer or anything else.. its not caused by 'normal' means TL;DR: 'it might only be a few years' where 'few' probably doesn't mean what I think it does. The fact that they called it 'one-size-fits-all' doesn't impress me. Cancer is to complex to have a one-size-fits all kind of a treatment no matter how hopeful it may sound.
