FORDvFERRARI: The film is a prologue to one of Canada’s strongest Le Mans connections via drivingdotca

The best stories, in motorsport or otherwise, have a tidy beginning, middle and end. And when the movie Ford v. Ferrari hits theatres on November 15 recounting Ford’s historic first American victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, it’s sure to have all of those elements neatly wrapped up in a Hollywood bow.

Among the collection of documents on display was a letter dated May 18, 1963, informing Ford’s head lawyer the deal with Ferrari appeared imminent — and also a telegraph from four days later stating the deal had been “suspended by mutual agreement.” “The ’65 race was even more of a disaster because it was the genesis of the Mk II, but not quite the Mk II yet,” Ryan says. “They thought they had the car because they had married the 427-cubic-inch engine into the great aerodynamic shape. The longest any of the cars lasted was nine hours.”

Canadians Play a Role, 50 Years LaterBut the film won’t touch on the Canadian connection. That comes into play nearly 50 years later, when the Ford GT goes into development in 2014 for the express purpose of securing the 50th anniversary win in 2016. To achieve this goal, Ford enacts the services of a long list of partners, one of them being chassis and parts constructor Multimatic, based in Markham, Ontario.

“I still remember that first official test day. It went so well, in the sense that the car proved, at least on that track under those conditions, to be reliable. Scott was giving us feedback on setup at that point. That doesn’t happen on the first day you go testing a car.”
