Barbie has endured, writes columnist Catherine Ford, \u0022living\u0022 through colour adjustments, costume changes, career and occupation changes.

Little girls in the late 1940s didn’t have a choice of much different dolls. And then, in 1959, far too late for me, came Barbie. The soon-to-be-iconic doll was the brainchild of Ruth Handler, the co-founder of Mattel.

But Barbie endured. She “lived” through colour adjustments, costume changes, career and occupation changes, and even survived the “math is hard” fiasco. They are now spoiling their grandchildren. All of this may have been the pressure of the times or the simple force of biology. But Barbie, I believe, gave their children a different outlook: things could change; life could offer more possibilities.
