Former Ontario finance minister Sousa not ruling out run for federal Liberal nomination in coveted Mississauga-Lakeshore riding
Sven Spengemann represented the riding of Mississauga-Lakeshore from 2015 until this year. He stepped down in June to accept a position with the UN.Trudeau called the Mississauga-Lakeshore byelection on Nov. 6, and voting day will be Dec. 12. But Ford’s labour dispute with 55,000 CUPE education workers in Ontario is proving to be unpopular for the premier, and could be a defining issue for his term.
“It helped the prime minister a bit, but the election is not for a month,” said Lyle. “So, it may not have put the Conservatives on the best foot at the start, but it’s not likely to be a deciding factor by the time we get to the end,” he said, unless negotiations fail and there is another walkout. The NDP candidate is Julia Kole, and Mary Kidnew will carry the Green Party’s banner. Kole ran in the Ontario provincial election in June as the NDP candidate in the same riding, and came in third place with only 8.5 per cent of the vote.
First elected as a Liberal MPP in 2007, Sousa represented Mississauga-Lakeshore in the Ontario legislature and was re-elected twice. He lost in the 2018 election, the worst in the party’s history, in which it failed to attain official party status. The provincial Liberals again went without official party status in June of this year.
The Liberals have carried this riding for 25 of the last 29 years, but with relatively close margins.
abbas_rana1 Ford is literally offering CUPE MORE than the national average for collectively bargained wage increases in Canada. Average 1.8%. Ford: 3.5% for lowest paid CUPE member, 2% or everyone else.
ImpairedCRONIC abbas_rana1 The record shows that conservatives are merely 'black-hearted'. I would suggest 'thieves' or 'gangsters' as a more appropriate avatar than 'accountant'.
