For the first time in 50 years, more Ontarians are moving to Quebec where housing can be half the price. Affordability, flexible work arrangements and a booming economy are leading the trend, experts say.

considering buying a home. The reason? He moved to Montreal.pursue a degree at Concordia University while continuing to work full-time remotely at his Toronto IT job.

Flexible work arrangements is another driving force behind the shift, as is Quebec’s booming economy that is catching up to Ontario’s. “I get to see how far my dollar goes here and how much easier it is to live. Being in Montreal has me rethinking my trajectory of where I want to live,” he said.In 2020-2021, 16,469 people moved from Ontario to Quebec while 16,370 moved from Quebec to Ontario, resulting in a net gain of 99 people, Statistics Canada said. By comparison during the five years before the pandemic almost 6,000 more people were moving from Quebec to Ontario on average each year.

Previous migrations to Ontario from Quebec were led by Ontario’s stronger economy, Quebec’s political unrest, and language laws that pushed out anglophones. According to a 2016 study by the Fraser Institute, between 1971 and 2015 around 600,000 people left Quebec for other parts of Canada.“We’re still in a period of transition. The remote work phenomenon has grown exponentially and gives further incentive for people to move,” said Jack Jedwab, president of the Association for Canadian Studies.

While Anglo Quebecers move to Ontario,😂

Since you hate francophones, stay where you are. We're full anyway. Thanks.

Good luck if you dont speak French Before moving I would at least look at Bill 101 and Bill 96 before making your decision.

I assume all Francophones

We consider moving to Canada and Quebec seems lovely. As a minority culture, it also seems right they have language legislation. What many people don't get is that everywhere has a language barrier for most people, and Quebec's isn't the highest / most onerous

thanks to the PC party and the Liberal party with the property tax system inflicted by Mike Harris not fixed by the following 3 governments. cuts to education, healthcare so on. then there is Bill 96 in Quebec.

Wait until they find out about Bill 96.

Why would anyone move to Quebec, after bill 96?!

Like my family in montreal says, toronto live to work, montreal work to live. They cant believe we work weekends, late etc.

What’s the point of tweeting your headlines only to not give access unless we pay?

Cskeete Don’t worry, Legault’s bill 96 will ensure a one-and-done.

Population has been growing in most cities in the world and the construction of houses, condos and apartment buildings didn't follow. Overpopulation needs to be address asap. We are approximately 8 B now and UN predicts 11 B by 2050.

Well, with Bill 96, the Quebec govt seems to be doing its best to put a stop to that.

😳 …they must want to pay higher taxes obviously 🙄 or they wouldn’t move here ! Oh well, welcome to TaxLand and all the other absurdities that comes with moving here

Cottages too are more reasonable in QC.

I hope they can all speak French. Besides housing, people need food and with the language laws, it will be tough to buy things and deal with necessities like utilities, etc.

I don't blame anyone for moving out of Toronto.

Bill 96 will stop Ontarians from running to the border. I grew up in Montreal, I am bilingual and have lived in Toronto for 20+ yrs. Montreal is nice to visit now… never moving back there tho. bill96

Those who think Quebec is a paradise for low house prices will soon find Bill 96 language law, which flouts democracy, will stifle getting social care in a language of one's choosing. Left Quebec 36 years ago PRECISELY for the same reason!!

You can buy a house for half the price, but the minute you move there, your rights are cut in half.

But then you have to live in Quebec.

Do you speak French?

Who REALLY wants to live in Quebec? Not I even if houses are at give away prices.

uh.... cause there banning english rofl

Many americans living in Qc...everyone likes them, great fun, they also adapt pretty well, mostly bilingual quite fast...easy also to relate as most quebeckers have traveled a lot in all parts of the US, less so in canada generally, except for work.

Until they realize bill96 and rents already going up!

There seems to be a clear difference...

daniel_foch Come for the cheap prices…stay for the racism…

Yeah check bill 96 first

daniel_foch Who in their right mind, would live in that racist province? There’s a reason why housing is less expensive there.

Why would I move to a place where the language I speak will be considered as inferior?

Whut? But the CAQ provincial finance minister said that the rising cost of housing is to create more whealth for citizens....

Start stretching your throat out, fellow Ontarians, cause you are going to have some bullsh*t shoved down there when you get here. More “others” is better because most Quebecers despise “others”. Just make sure to vote when you are here!

I hope they speak French or their lives will be difficult, especially if the have medical issues.

It’s not only the real estate it’s also the quality of life: the food is amazing and there are so many entertainment options

With time the Ontarians started understanding that more than anything else, politics cannot be about erasing our humanity. They relaxed the foot on the hysterics accelerator over our debate on sovereignty!

But our new bill96 is so intrusive to the Anglo’s , English Quebecers can literally house swap 🤷🏼‍♀️

So Quebec be ready , more people going to speak more English, because nobody in ontario speaks French 🤣

No interest in paying the Star to read that article but its kind of like a black person during apartheid moving to South Africa because there was cheaper rent lol

Nice timing. Better bone up on your french. Unless your just coming here to buy houses and then flip them to make money off the bidding wars

Cheapest one bedroom apt in Southern Ontario I could find was for 1300 a month, first one I found in the maritimes was 750 Why stay in the province Toronto keeps ruining

nacroix impact important sur Gatineau

Good 🥳

Good 🧐

Be careful these 'newcomers' don't gentrify the place. Usually people escape high prices will make that once cheap area soon become high as well before migrating elsewhere but not before screwing the local residents already living there.

Good .. bye-bye 😁

You don't have to know French to live in Montreal .

Time for all the FOMO buyers to jack up the prices in quebec !!! They travel in one large herd across the country

Not when you grew up in Toronto Ontario you don't move in Quebec My son would not move in Quebec either lol

Not me I would not move in Quebec no way I grew up in here in downtown Toronto Ontario What exactly I'm going to do in Quebec nah

Ummmm someone might wanna tell them that Quebec is a bunch of racists though....

ANYWHERE on the east coast is cheaper than Ontario🤣 My province has been swarming with ppl from Ontario since the pandemic started lol that’s part of the reason why we have a housing crisis here. Great for the economy tho🤷🏻‍♀️lol

SGirouxCTV Good news. It will grow the anglo community as our current govt in Quebec is trying to make us history by choking off any possible growth.

Tu parlez francais?

What are you talking about? People have been doing that for decades. Where have you been? In the 1950s my mother lived near Wakefield, Quebec and drove in to Ottawa for work every day because it cost WAY less than living in Ottawa.

Hopefully they speak French. English is illegal

They want to move to Quebec to get a cheaper house when house prices are going up here as well. Then there is the French language laws....

Also terrible health care, higher taxes and alienation of the English speaking citizens lol GG Quebecor

Are they ready for… the French?

People are running out of places to run to in this corrupt country that uses excess unsustainable population growth for “economic growth” When all it does it increase housing demand and costs and drives down wages Economy grows and most of us are worse off with lower QoL

Too bad the French are sub human.

I moved to Quebec from Manitoba in 2010 and was going to move to Ontario prior to the pandemic. The pandemic changed everything. The way Montreal operates has changed. I love Quebec now and have no desire to leave.

I believe Quebec is in the process of changing their language laws that would make it even more difficult for English speaking people. This is probably a great option for someone who speaks French though 👍🏾

Hahaha... 🤣 They're in for a VERY lively time indeed, unless they also drop anglophone WASP aspirations at the border.

The redcoats are coming the redcoats are coming! 😂

Can you blame people really as inflation is putting many in the poorhouse.

hellocvgypsy

What sound mind intelligent person would ever want to stay in Ontario..minimum wage work, prices of homes and rentals..grey skys 4 days a week..no thank..I couldn't get out fast enough, should of did it 40 years ago

Many Ontarians are also moving east to the maritimes in search for bargains in housing. The result has been high real estate prices and inflation. Young people in the maritimes are being priced out of the market and services especially health care are being stretched to the max.

The rest of anglophones are moving out Bill 96

And taxes are higher! It's communist. Linguistic cleansing. You don't have the freedom of choice. Your rights are greatly limited simply living there. All the french in Canada should move to Quebec and then we'll put a fence around it to keep them in there ! Great idea !

Very pretty province....very friendly people.😊🙏👍

Loyalty most times has a very limited life span

The average cost of a condo apartment in Toronto was more than $820,000 in April 2022, compared to Montreal, which is around $410,000.
