“We’re the restaurant that makes you feel like you’re home.” Best known for their flavourful and buttery pea soup, United Bakers has been a staple in the Jewish community for almost 110 years.
When I told my Jewish friends I was headed to United Bakers Dairy Restaurant, tucked into the south end of Lawrence Plaza at Bathurst and Lawrence, they all said the same thing: “You have to get the green pea soup. It’s the best in the city!”
During our chat, five customers approached Nathan to say hello. “What’s important to us,” he says, “is creating real connections and interacting with everyone in as meaningful a way as possible.” On any given day, United Bakers is reminiscent of a, the reception that follows a synagogue service, where congregants socialize other over plates of danishes and chocolate babka.
Philip’s parents, Herman and Dora, oversaw the rise of United Bakers on Spadina, where, he says, “you went to see someone or to be seen” in the 60-seat restaurant. “It became an island in a sea of uncertainty for immigrants.” And the famous pea soup remained a favourite, says Nathan, who spent his teen years working as a line cook. “I would come to school after my morning shift smelling like onions and potatoes,” he says. “As challenging as it was, it was also a nice way to get some pocket change.”
