“The way it’s looking, there’s going to be hardly anything there,” said Caleb Scott, Foothills County’s manager of agricultural services.
Other Alberta municipalities, including Stettler and Vulcan counties, have also declared agricultural disasters this month. Jason Schneider, Vulcan County councillor, reeve and farmer stands in his neighbour’s wheat field devastated by drought conditions in 2021.“We did get a little moisture in the last couple of days, but I don’t think it’s enough to save the season,” Schneider said at the June 21 meeting.
Some pockets of Newell County have received some moisture, but the municipality is generally “very, very dry,” said county agricultural services director Todd Green. Much of that is due to a shortage of runoff water from the Bow River, which is where the county gets its irrigation.
