Hayes’ new deal would pay him $7.14 million annually for seven years. The 27-year-old unrestricted free agent was traded to Philadelphia earlier this month in exchange for a 2019 fifth-round pick. He completed the 2018-19 campaign with Winnipeg after a trade deadline deal sent him from the New York Rangers to the Jets in exchange for Brendan Lemieux, a 2019 first-round pick and a conditional 2022 fourth-round pick.
The Dorchester, Mass., native posted 13 points through 20 regular season games for the Jets, along with three points in six playoff games. He left New York with 216 points through 361 games over the course of his five years with the Rangers. With the new deal in tow, Hayes slots in as the third-highest paid forward on the Flyers roster. Captain Claude Giroux’s $8.275-million cap hit leads the forward corps, followed by Jakub Voracek’s $8.25-million hit. Hayes’ new deal would position him just above James van Riemsdyk’s $7-million hit.June 18, 2019
