Elvin Lewis Jr., 54, was convicted in October 2019 for his part in the scam orchestrated by cyber criminals in China two years ago. They targeted the City of Ottawa\u0027s treasurer with phoney emails.

In a recent affidavit filed in Southern Florida’s U.S. District Court, Lewis asked a judge to release him while he awaited sentencing on 11 counts of money laundering.

Lewis said his medical conditions — asthma, high blood pressure and prediabetes — make him “especially vulnerable” to COVID-19, which has ravaged the state’s prison system. “You see, my son is concerned with his child whom he loves dearly and his 84-year-old mother and has demonstrated great compassion for us to the fullest extent of his capacity over the years,” she said in an affidavit.
