Etienne Morin in now headed back to his junior club, but the 18-year-old defenceman made a positive impression in his first training camp with the Calgary Flames.in the 2023 NHL Draft, was returned Friday to the QMJHL’s Moncton Wildcats.

The Flames also reassigned four players — forwards Parker Bell, William Stromgren and Brett Sutter and rearguard Jarrod Gourley — to the AHL’s Wranglers and released blue-liner Mikael Diotte from his amateur tryout. Morin, who led all QMJHL defencemen with 21 goals last season, should be a workhorse for the Wildcats this winter. He suited up for Monday’s 5-3 exhibition loss to the Seattle Kraken at the Saddledome, earning a bit of power-play time and some post-game praise from head coach Ryan Huska, who told reporters: “I thought as the night went on, he did a good job.”

The Flames now have 42 hopefuls remaining in training camp — 23 forwards, 15 defencemen and four netminders.
