Watch onShortly after a morning meeting with the provincial government, the leader of the fish harvesters' protest in St. John’s emerged from the Confederation Building on Friday, March 22, with good news for his colleagues anxiously waiting in the parking lot.“I believe we put together a good deal this morning. … This deal is not a deal that was forced upon me, this is a deal I see as being the best deal,” John Efford Jr. said, to a round of hearty applause.

“ completely volunteer of my time and the reason it’s not going to be a paid position — no expenses, zero, it’s going to be completely out of my pocket — because it’s going to be for my business and for your business,” he said.“On behalf of every fisherman in N.L., we thank you from the bottom of our hearts,” he said to Efford, to another round of cheers.

“Without this information, we would have had to walk out of that meeting today because it was information I didn’t know,” said Efford.Spingle, who said he would be there to help members in any way he can, and Pretty both addressed the harvesters as well. The 2024 fishing season is supposed to commence with the snow crab fishery in early April, although there still has not been a price set and no opening date scheduled.

“What has happened today is … a pushback against the companies,” said Pretty. “Long overdue, but it’s here now and we intend to play it properly.”
