Quebec has tabled a bill proposing ignoring the Constitutional mandate requiring Canadian lawmakers to swear an oath to the sovereign.

Newly minted B.C. premier David Eby posted this selfie after his first caucus meeting since attaining the top job. It mainly serves to highlight what a giant Eby is; at 6’7” he is dramatically taller than anyone else in the B.C. legislature. The NP Comment newsletter from columnist Colby Cosh and NP Comment editors tackles the important topics with boldness, verve and wit. And for really foundational changes to the Constitution, it requires unanimous provincial support. Abolishing the “office of the Queen,” for instance, would need a signoff from all 10 provincial legislatures — making Canada the hardest country in the commonwealth in which to abolish the monarchy .Article content

The Constitution allows legislatures to amend their own provincial constitutions without federal approval. As the Constitution states, “each province may exclusively make laws amending the constitution of the province.”, Quebec doesn’t have its own written constitution. Just like Canada, the province’s founding document is the British North America Act.that Quebec could simply start rewriting the Quebec-specific parts of the British North America Act and nobody would be able to stop them.

GillPowell4 Tear it up: adopt the US Constitution.

lamphieryeg Why don’t they just leave already

Excellent, let them separate - it would be good for Canada.

It’s more and more evident that this Prime Minister is incapable and unwilling to defend the Constitution of Canada, and this the most important responsibility of any Prime Minister

I agree with Quebec on that one. Why to make oath to Charles, who is he? Nobody to most Canadians. It is time for Canadian tea party.

As always, it's ok for Quebec, but not for the rest of Canada. They might as well be their own country.

It doesn’t mean QC can just start slipping edits into the national “big-c” Constitution. “Simply reading the text of the Constitution Act, 1982, as well as surveying the history of previous amendments, provides one with the clear answer that Quebec cannot do so,” wrote Peach.

Just because the changes didn’t receive any political pushback doesn’t mean they’re constitutional. McGill U constitutional scholar Ian Peach said that permitting legislatures to change the “constitution of the province” only means they can alter their “small-c” constitution.'

In 2021 legal scholar Patrick Taillon proposed that QC could simply rewrite the Quebec-specific parts of the BNA Act & nobody would stop them. The Legault govt rewrote the BNA Act to identify Quebec as a “nation” & included a caveat that “the only official language is French.”

'Any change to the text is supposed to require the approval of the House of Commons, the Senate and at least two-thirds of the provinces. And for really foundational changes to the Constitution, it requires unanimous provincial support.' TristinHopper

'For obvious reasons, there is opposition to the notion that anyone can just amend the Constitution when they feel like it Quebec’s solution is simply to send Ottawa a note saying that they’re not going to listen to that part of the Constitution anymore.' TristinHopper

By all means allow QC provincial representatives to pledge allegiance to the province of QC or Canada instead of the Monarchy but the proposed changes need to be discussed formally with other provinces & constitutional experts.

The longer Trudeau remains in Ottawa the more destabilized this country will be.

We could use having the other provinces get in the fight against the Fed Guv

That’s okay,it’s not Alberta after all.Biggest hypocrites in our history

Can we have the same level of grief stricken panic thrown at Alberta please.

That's fine. Just don't let Alberta do it

A tipping point Will end up in front of the Supreme Court

Lmao what a world. National Post: Quebec dude won't swear to the King! Atrocious! Also National Post: Alberta says it is its own country! Totally checks out.

And the Pm of Quebec will have nothing to say and in fact support it.

We didn't sign it; deal with it.

If quebec can do it. So can the other provinces

Good! The sooner Quebec leaves Canada the better off Canada will be. Quebec is like a necrotic vestigial limb - useless and rotten.

It's Quebec, that's what they do. This is not news.

Well now would be the time many provinces have lost faith in Ottawa actually probably a prime time for Quebec to push it

And all we get from Trudeau is ... crickets. Quebec is a higher priority for Trudeau than Canada is as a whole. JustinTrudeau liberal_party

Can’t to comment on this RachelNotley

And not a peep out of Trudeau or his lap dog lametti

Let them rewrite the British North America Act. Quebec is a fascist cesspool.

I thought the BNA act was cast in stone. Of course, the liberals ignore it when dealing with Quebec but call out the dogs and horses when dealing with the other provinces. Just another example of a 2 faced government.

Be great if I could read it. Seems all or most Postmedia sites aren't reachable this morning.

Whay else is new they think they run Canada think again

fairrepresentation stopfederaloverreach Shhh.. You’ll distract from Alberta. QU can do as it likes and get away with it as long as they support the Liberals. All Premiers need to do what’s best for their province. Isn’t that why they were elected? Canadians deserve better.

Who is going to have the courage to take Quebec to court?

That's ok. It's Quebec

Change the constitution or face Alberta independence referendum, says architect of Sovereignty Act | CBC RadioThe Alberta Sovereignty Act passed in the early hours of Thursday morning, giving Premier Danielle Smith the authority to redress any federal policy, law or program that her cabinet deems harmful to Alberta. Call their bluff. This is all just political theatre and unfortunately the conservatives in Alberta have fallen for it. 'By leaving federation, he said the province could run its energy sector and build pipelines without interference' Build them to where? The US doesn't want it, and BC & Manitoba will basically say fuck you. Landlocked countries don't just stamp their feet and get what they want. Do it. Wouldn't be the first failed referendum.

Scotland and Quebec share a great dealKAMOURASKA, QUE.—My father was raised a Scot. Although born in Brantford, Ont., in 1913, he moved to Edinburgh, U.K., in 1920 with his mother and brothers to join his father, who had been demobilized to Edinburgh after the First World War. The Caddell name is Scottish, but the last ancestor to live in Scotland was sent to Barbados as a prisoner of war by Oliver Cromwell in 1658. More than 250 years later, my father arrived in Edinburgh. The time in Scotland transformed him, as he attended George Heriot’s school. Along with advanced mathematics and science, he and his classmates were taught the poems of Robert Burns and the history of Scotland. His boyhood hero was the rugby and track star Eric Liddell. When his father abandoned the family, they moved to Montreal, where he was called “Scotty” until he regained his Canadian accent. But Scotland had its impact: he gave his children Scottish names, recited the poems of Burns by heart, and put on the Scots’ burr with ease. If anyone had a sense of Scotland as a nation, he did. And yet, as the Scottish independence movement gained momentum, he told me he would have voted “no” because “Scotland was better off within the United Kingdom.” My mother was raised in Québec City, la vieille capitale, which, like Edinburgh, has a castle on a hill overlooking a river that flows to the ocean. A bilingual anglophone, she loved Quebec history and had many francophone friends. She was determined never to leave Quebec, despite the threat of independence. She was part of the federalist “Yvette” movement in the 1980 Quebec referendum and voted “Non.” I mention this in the wake of Saint Andrew’s Day and the U.K. Supreme Court decision to refuse Scotland’s demand for a second referendum on independence. It borrowed heavily from the 1998 Canadian Supreme Court decision on Quebec’s right to separate. Our court declared the right to self-determination applies “where a people is oppressed, as for example under foreign military occupation; or wh

73-year-old Ontario woman loses $5,000 to grandparent scam, Quebec suspects charged: policePolice in York Region, Ont. say a 73-year-old grandmother is the latest victim of a scam that’s seen Canadian grandparents defrauded out of millions of dollars in recent years. It's similar to the carbon tax scam. When my daughter was in university, her friend had just died and she was distraught. Someone within her circle took advantage and defrauded her of $9000 dollars. When she went to the police, the one taking her statement called her stupid for letting it happen to her.
