Intelligent Systems tactical role-playing game looks and plays swell on Switch, but it also lowers the stakes of this stressful series

Release Date: July 26, 2019There’s only one way to play a Fire Emblem game: With permadeath switched on and the difficulty set to hard. Anyone who plays otherwise isn’t really playing Fire Emblem, but rather some ghostly, watered down facsimile of what Fire Emblem is supposed to be.

It does a better job than any of its predecessors in developing characters through conversations and cut scenes, making us care about them more than ever before and thus raising the stakes. That these characters appear as lushly animated and emotive figures on Switch rather than the pixelated sprites we typically see on the franchise’s handheld entries makes them feel even more human.

Both moves are bound to expand the game’s popularity among casual players, but they’ll likely leave some long-time fans thinking the developers wimped out just a little. Between battles we’re typically provided an expansive world-in-peril story populated by a large cast of characters, many of whom are the fighters you take into battle. You’ll get to know these comrades well, eking out their backstories in conversations, watching them fall in love with each other, and listening to them talk about their future plans. It’s not Shakespeare, but only the coldest of hearts won’t sympathize, empathize, or otherwise connect or relate to at least some of these heroes.

The stronger-than-usual focus on storytelling — we take on the role of a young professor at a monastery-cum-military-school, where our protagonist runs around chatting with and instructing students in various combat arts — provides us with plenty of opportunity to get to know our brothers and sisters in arms better than any previous Fire Emblem game.
