Steve Craig, Nova Scotia's minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture - Barb Dean-SimmonsCarl Purcell admits he’s not a fan of finfish aquaculture.

Purcell, who is past president of the Nova Scotia Salmon Association, said he was happy to be part of the process. “For instance, West River in Sheet Harbour and St. Marys’ River are two rivers on the Atlantic Coast where we’re trying to bring back wild Atlantic Salmon. And we think we are being successful, thanks to some of the projects over the past 10 to 15 years.”

According to the province’s Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, sea farming is a major industry for Nova Scotia. The work to overhaul aquaculture regulations in Nova Scotia began in 2014, with an independent review and report led by Meinhard Doelle and William Lahey, from Dalhousie University School of Law.

At this point, Craig said, it would be premature for him comment on whether closed containment systems might be legislated in the future, or whether areas near salmon rivers should be closed to finfish aquaculture.
