Dispatches from Hamilton’s light-rail limbo GlobeToronto

An apartment building at 832 King St. East in Hamilton, Ont., seen here on on Feb. 12, 2020, was expropriated for a proposed LRT line.Scattered throughout Hamilton are scores of derelict buildings, the legacy of a cancelled transit plan that was, ironically, intended to help revitalize the city’s struggling centre.

“These for the most part are not high-income areas; these are marginalized communities and marginalized people,” said John-Paul Danko, a pro-LRT Hamilton councillor. “Imagine what you would think if you … [lost] your house on the premise of this project and then the project never happens. It’s just a huge slap in the face”Fred Lum

The government argues that the price tag for the project had gone up more than five times, to $5.5-billion, but has refused to release the third-party assessment it said had produced the figure. It would provide better service on a key east-west route, yes, and free up buses now being used on the corridor to be re-deployed elsewhere in Hamilton. The effect, they argue, is that a downtown LRT would mean better transit all across the city.

globetoronto Next time the Globe does a story on hamilton lrt speak to someone other than danko who speaks for the very small twitter prolrt minority. This is a hard no for the majority of the city.

globetoronto By cancelling LRT Mulroney and the Ford govt have done more to support affordable housing than any Hamilton politician at any level of government.

globetoronto The LRT was nothing more than a forced demographic swap-out. Hamilton council did nothing to try to ameliorate the impact on affordability of housing, and those of us who have managed to hang on are quite fortunate in the cancellation.

globetoronto 1. The buildings are not 'derelict.' That mischaracterization was intentional, to support the argument that LRT was needed for development. 2. The LRT was a cure for 'social problems' ecause it would make it too expensive for the 'social problems' to live in Hamilton.
