, though there are still huge numbers of callbacks to the bombastic 1986 original. But also – and this is vital – there’s a whole new story here as well. Sequels are sometimes content to perform a victory lap. Maverick pushes the envelope.

Turns out the rules of dogfighting also apply to life; a moving target is harder to hit. Before Maverick can catch hell for his little stunt, he gets recalled to Top Gun, this time as an instructor, and working under another hard-ass admiral, played by Jon Hamm. And speaking of long simmering feelings, Jennifer Connelly joins the cast as Penny Benjamin, briefly mentioned in the firstas an admiral’s daughter with whom Maverick once “went ballistic.” Now she’s a single mom with a teenaged daughter and a bar where all the pilots hang out. Convenient.

Regardless, the pilots need to fly their F-18s through a narrow mountainous trench, avoiding enemy fighters and surface-mounted missiles, and fire on a ventilation hatch that’s a little over two metres wide. And no, they’re not allowed to use The Force.Article content
