Then there’s pastor Chuck Smith , a self-described “square” who sees in Lonnie and his ragtag group of friends a new flock of Christian converts, waiting to be saved. It’s an uplifting story with some fine music, though it does file off a few rough edges and sanitize some of its characters’ human frailties, to the point where the movie itself seems to be trying to proselytize. We see Laurie go from military student to drugged-out hippie to falling in love with Cathe and also her Church, though he worries at first that it may be “just another high” he’s chasing.
You can Google the participants if you want to know how it all turned out, warts and all. I would only add that, despite the lovely where-are-they-now end credits, no revolution is ever truly over.
