IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POST - Ian NathansonSYDNEY — Post-tropical storm Fiona packed hurricane-force winds into Cape Breton on Saturday that toppled trees and power poles, damaged properties and displaced at least 200 residents in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality alone.
In a media teleconference storm update on Saturday afternoon, Premier Tim Houston said his government has been in contact with federal officials to seek out disaster relief funding as well as tapping into the military and power crews from as far away as Ontario to help in the efforts to restore power.
The storm was so severe that the Cape Breton Regional Municipality and Victoria County both declared states of local emergencies. Throughout Sydney, North Sydney, Glace Bay and New Waterford, signs of visible destruction were everywhere: felled trees cutting access to streets, houses losing roofs, along with downed power lines and stations.
Post-tropical storm Fiona took down this tree and power lines on Argyle Street near Alexandra Street in Sydney. IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRTON POST - IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POSTWireless customers were also affected, with internet access either spotty or nil in some cases.
