TORONTO -- The federal government announced on Monday the first four appointees to a newly created commission to protect endangered Indigenous languages.that three directors and one commissioner were chosen to serve on the Office of the Commissioner of Indigenous Languages , which was established after the Indigenous Languages Act received royal assent in June 2019.

Languages are an important part of any culture, but through the effects of colonization, Liberty says many Indigenous languages are at risk of becoming extinct. "Michif language is a very quickly dying language, we have very few speakers who speak the traditional Michif. And so, we're very close to extinction in our language. It's such a sad state of events," she said.
