The president of General Motors Canada says she’d like to see the provincial and federal governments offer more consistent incentives to people hoping to purchase electric vehicles to compete with the options in the United States, and to increase the adoption rate for those types of vehicles.

The governments of Canada and Ontario earlier this year announced a deal with Volkswagen to see the company build its first overseas battery manufacturing plant in southwestern Ontario, to the tune of more than $13 billion in subsidies. According to Statistics Canada, 7.2 per cent of new light-duty vehicles sold in the first half of 2022 were electric.West said GM “shares the government’s vision” that all light-duty vehicles will be electric by 2035, adding the company is working to make sure there are options at various price points to make it more accessible for consumers.

West said her hope is for those incentives to come from a combination of federal and provincial governments, especially because “stackable” subsidies from both levels of government are “really meaningful.” Canada is competing with the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act, which offers billions of dollars in energy incentives south of the border, including for electric vehicles.
