A federal jail inmate in New York City died Wednesday after correctional officers sprayed him with pepper spray, the Bureau of Prisons said.

Officers sprayed Jamel Floyd, 35, after he barricaded himself in his cell at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center and broke a cell door window with a metal object, the agency said.

Floyd's mother said her son suffered from asthma and diabetes and that jail officials were aware of his health conditions.Members of the jail's medical staff checking on Floyd later found him unresponsive, the agency said. They started life-saving measures and called an ambulance. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The head of the union representing correctional officers at the jail declined comment, saying management had yet to provide any information on what happened.

This would not even be a news story two weeks ago.

He had asthma...they should've shot him, I guess.

Another white man with authority murdering a person of colour wrongfully imprisoned by the racist justice system.

So this happened in the USA, not in Canada. In future, it would be nice to note that in the title, please!

Where did this happen New York? And numerous police officers shot one on life support in Nevada all lives matter and their children cry🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Jamel Floyd, any relation to George Floyd? Crazy world out there!

Guess we should just close the jails and let all the felons free.

Don't post fake news from the US. Make your own fake news. I understand that's what the Liberals pay you for.
