A Springfield, Illinois, man is suing the city and six of its police officers for opening a small urn containing his daughter's ashes and allegedly 'desecrating' it during a traffic stop.

A Springfield, Illinois, man is suing the city and six of its police officers for opening a small urn containing his daughter's ashes and allegedly "desecrating" it during a traffic stop.

In its response to the lawsuit, the city denied Barnes' claims and maintained the city and its officers are protected by "qualified immunity as their conduct was justified by an objectively reasonable belief that it was lawful." Barnes' vehicle was shot one time in the passenger side rear fender, according to a police incident report. "It is unknown if the blue Chrysler driven by was a target of the shooter or was hit by the round," the incident report states.

"Then I checked for cocaine, but it looks like it's probably molly," the officer says in the bodycam video to one of his colleagues. "No, no, no, bro. That's my daughter. What are y'all doing bro ... give me that bro, that's my daughter," Barnes says in the video when officers showed him the urn.

Federal government urged to review settlement decisions for residential school survivorsCalls grow to open residential school settlements to more survivors Oh please. The idea of a settlement is that it “settles” the claims it relates to.This constant idea that everything aboriginal is never settled, always open, leads to bad feeling and contempt. The settlements were made with battalions of lawyers & reviews and approvals by courts Federal government to review federal government decisions… ok. Why do we keep attaching “healing” to compensation? Society knows money alone will never cure these issues yet that’s all it boils down to in the end. Sad repetitious cycle of failure.
