Family Daze: a 1970 Star photo revealed a close-knit family

Since 2007, Ontarians have marked the third Monday in February as Family Day. But every day is family day for the Schlesingers, photographed by the Star’s Bob Olsen in 1970.The close-knit children – Esther, Michael, Leo and Avi – clustered around parents Benjamin and Rachel for a photo to accompany an article on “family togetherness,” a topic the Schlesingers knew a lot about.

Both parents were well-versed in family matters: dad Benjamin is professor emeritus at the University of Toronto’s School of Social Work, and mom Rachel is professor emeritus at the Division of Social Sciences at York University. Every seven years, Benjamin took a year-long leave, bringing the brood on an adventure. “We lived in Jamaica, Perth, Australia and Auckland,” says Esther. “Our parents instilled in us the value of having a good education and taught us about their love of travel.”
