The RCMP provides police to provinces across Canada, but it is missing targets in every region, with vacancy rates up to 17%

The vacancy rate is 13 per cent in New Brunswick, 10 per cent in Manitoba and eight per cent in Nova Scotia.

in the RCMP noted the force didn’t have a good system for addressing them, even as it continued to take on more assignments. Brian Sauvé, president and CEO of the National Police Federation, the union representing RCMP officers, Sauvé said there are real shortages and serious demands on rank-and-file officers across the country.

Sauvé said there are unique challenges to the RCMP, including what has been a very lengthy application and training process, which he said needs to be updated. Newfoundland’s Public Safety Minister John Hogan said the province has long had concerns about RCMP staffing levels. He said it’s time for the Trudeau government to be clear about what its long-term plans are for the RCMP and fund it accordingly.
