The world has enough rare earth minerals and other critical raw materials to switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy to produce electricity and limit global warming, according to a new study that counters concerns about the supply of such minerals.

The world has enough rare earth minerals and other critical raw materials to switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy to produce electricity and limit global warming, according toWith a push to get more electricity from solar panels, wind turbines, hydroelectric and nuclear power plants, some people have worried that there won't be enough key minerals to make the decarbonization switch.Rare earth minerals, also called rare earth elements, actually aren't that rare. The U.S.

"Decarbonization is going to be big and messy, but at the same time we can do it," said study co-author Zeke Hausfather, a climate scientist at the tech company Stripe and Berkeley Earth. "I'm not worried we're going to run out of these materials." Another close call is tellurium, which is used in industrial solar farms and where there may be only slightly more estimated resources than what would be required in a big green push. But Hausfather said there are substitutions available in all these materials' cases.

‘Rare’ and once it’s used up … oil baby !

How do you get it out of the earth … using fossil fuel?

If you have a EV in your driveway, ask yourself this : What is fair wage that you would pay the 7 year old kid who dug the lithium out to power your car? Would you base it on the price per Kw/h or by the money you saved on gasoline?

We can't dig for oil but can dig for minerals 🤔

Hey do you know what it means when a tweet gets ratio'd?

Rare 🙄 so not for us little pesants ...

How do we get those and turn them to energy?! Is it clean? Do we use children?

This news is brought out, years or maybe decades after, certain select hoarded shares on these mining rights. They've been holding on to the electric car ideas since 1991. Inside trading, could be a well manipulated plan that could last for decades.

Still needs to be in high enough concentration and grade and while it may not make things warmer (huh?) there are other side effects from mining the greenies don't want you to know. Puff piece basically and a poor attempt to address a very real and fair critique.

So when we run out of that shit then what? Fucking dumb!

In order to electrify the automotive industry we'd need to increase the production of lithium, cobalt, copper and whatever else by 20-30%. That can't be done. Also they don't make mining equipment that's carbon free. Mining isn't carbon free

Rare earth mineral extraction is a lot worse than oil extraction.

'Rare minerals to fuel green energy.' That statement alone is absolutely hilarious!!!

How is mining rare earth minerals different to mining oil and natural gas?

It’s WORSE for the climate . It’s all a scam

What a line of crap!! CTV and it FAKE NEWS again!! FOLLOW the MONEY!!

This is 'green' energy

The author of this piece was clearly not paying attention to the authors they were trolling. For starters, and I'm just taking a highly educated guess here, scientists aren't looking for 17 different raw materials required to make electricity. There are 17 rare earth metals.

Doug Ford's ring of fire should pay well, while deeming disabled injured workers into poverty keeps going on, without rights & freedoms to a public courtroom checkup.

I literally can’t even read anything your propaganda machine spits out anymore. Go away!!!

And a few months after the shift? No more 'renewables' that rely on 'rare earth minerals' The level of lunacy is beyond comprehension....

anyone with a gr 10 education knows this new green energy shift is going destroy our planet and economy.

Somehow mining, rare earth minerals and “green” don’t go together in my mind. Mining is just as (if not more) environmentally impacting as extracting O&G. Unless, they’re going to be doing it by hand, by moonlight, and use wheelbarrows to move the products. What a farce.

In Trudumb’s world we will mine with a pick axe and shovel and pushcarts…🤷‍♂️🤡😳🤣🇨🇦

Yeah. And China controls or has there hand in 90% of it!!!! All we are doing is supporting China while killing our economy and loonie. Our petro loonie will be worth nothing.

LOL!! That’s awesome 😂🤣🤡🇨🇦👌🏼

It is the Chinese processing that is going offline. Which is not ecological/GREEN at all.

« Rare earth minerals » and « green energy » 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Look at how hard they're pushing this. Pass!

NO.

Thankfully the world has slaves mining cobalt. There's no way companies will abuse workers making a dollar a day as they risk it all to feed their family. Thanks CTV. Ignorance is bliss.

so how are you going to mine and refine all this ore . And still not destroy the world with you carbon

Owners of electric vehicles should only be allowed to charge their cars with wind or solar power, otherwise it’s just pretend.

How about Paul Pelosi?

Absolute bosh and nonsense. You don't know that for a fact. What the hell is wrong with you?

I'm afraid this is an early election ploy by the Liberal government to peak the interest of the mindless Liberal followers and don't understand the value of critical thinking. Use your heads. What they want to do in the time frame they want to do it in is impossible.

So how does one get these 'rare' minerals? Equipment needed? Chemicals needed? How much environmental damage is needed? Seems green as in $ , yet not environmentally friendly

Ok but how much would we need over 10, 30, 50, 100 yrs? We need to go back to looking down the road and asking questions again. Just because we can doesnt automatically make it the best solution.

China now has 52% of new coal burning plants this year . Take a hike .

Even brief exposure to traffic pollution impairs brain function, new study findsJust two hours of exposure to diesel exhaust fumes is enough to lower certain areas of brain function, according to the first human exposure study. This may explain why large urban areas are mostly left leaning politically. People used to joke that Liberalism is a mental disorder. It may just be a function of pollution in cities. Wow, so the truckers are actually the reason for all the bad decisions in Ottawa. How ironic. Brief exposure to the Toronto Star causes impaired brain function!
